What Does a Residential Radon Test Actually Measure?

Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas that forms when uranium in soil and rock breaks down. It seeps through foundation cracks, floor joints, and other openings and accumulates in the lower levels of your home. A residential radon test measures the concentration of radon gas in your home’s air, expressed in Becquerels per cubic metre (Bq/m³). Health Canada’s guideline for acceptable radon levels is 200 Bq/m³ – anything above this threshold indicates that mitigation should be considered. Radon testing includes:

  • Placement of a certified long-term or short-term radon detector in the lowest livable area of your home
  • A testing period that captures an accurate reading of your radon levels
  • Collection and laboratory analysis of the detector or digital readings
  • A clear, easy-to-understand report of your radon levels
  • A professional and honest recommendation, based on your results

How Long Does Radon Testing Take?

The duration of a radon test depends on the method used. Long-term testing (the gold standard and recommended by Health Canada) involves placing a passive detector in your home for a minimum of 90 days, ideally over the fall and winter months when windows and doors are kept closed. Short-term tests, which run for a minimum of 48–96 hours, are also available and are commonly used in real estate transactions or when a faster result is needed.

  • Long-term tests (90+ days) are the most accurate method and are recommended by Health Canada.
  • Short-term tests (48–96 hours minimum) are suitable for real estate transactions and preliminary screenings.
  • Tests should be conducted during closed-house conditions (ideally during fall or winter in Alberta).
  • Results from long-term testing are more reliable for determining whether mitigation is warranted.
  • Our team will recommend the right test type based on your specific situation and timeline.
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Have more questions about radon and radon testing? We’re always happy to explain the science.

01

What is the Health Canada guideline for radon levels?

Health Canada has established a guideline of 200 Bq/m³ as the maximum acceptable level of radon in a home. If your home tests above this threshold, Health Canada recommends taking action to reduce radon levels with a professionally installed mitigation system. The lower your home’s radon level, the better – there is no level that is completely without risk.

02

Does radon affect all types of homes?

Radon can be found in any type of home regardless of age, construction type, or condition. Whether your home is newly built or decades old, has a finished basement or a crawl space, sits on a slab or has a full foundation, radon can enter it. Even well-sealed homes can have elevated radon levels, which is why testing is the only way to know for certain what’s happening in your specific property.

03

What happens if my radon levels come back high?

If your test results show radon levels above Health Canada’s guideline of 200 Bq/m³, Radon Doctors will walk you through your options clearly and without pressure. Our science-led approach means we diagnose the issue properly before recommending a solution. In most cases, a sub-slab depressurization system can significantly and reliably reduce radon levels. We’ll explain exactly how it works and what to expect before any work begins.

04

Is the free radon test as accurate as a paid one?

Absolutely. Our free radon testing option uses certified detection equipment that meets the same standards as any professional test. We offer free testing to remove any barriers for homeowners who want to know their radon levels without the concern of upfront cost. Accurate results and professional analysis are included – there’s no compromise on quality.
